University of Montpellier lab profile

The Chemistry Department at the University of Montpellier is able to apply microwave technology to a range of different applications in chemical synthesis or extraction processes. The procedure for extraction of flavors and fragrances from plants or spices comprises two steps: extraction using a hydrodistillation method then analysis by GC or GCMS. While the analysis requires minutes, the hydrodistillation extraction process takes approximately 4 hours to complete. The Chemistry Department purchased a Milestone ETHOS X microwave enhanced extraction system that has reduced the extraction time to 15 minutes. The system also delivers a product with higher purity compared to traditional extraction methods that are based on the use of organic solvents.
