The Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) and the Marine Science Institute of Andalusía (ICMAN) are based in Mallorca and Cádiz respectively. Both are prestigious research centers belonging to CSIC (Higher Council for Scientific Research)closely linked to the University of the Balearic Islands and the University of Cadiz.
Its research belongs to the field of Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecology, ranging from the study of biogeochemical cycles in the oceans to the development and implementation of analytical methods for application in environmental studies.
CHALLENGE
The study of trace elements to ambient levels requires the use of high purity acid. Moreover, all the material used in the preparation of samples and subsequent analysis must be cleaned thoroughly with high purity concentrated acid. Therefore, buying high-quality acids is essential and it implicates high costs for the lab.

IMPLEMENTATION of duoPUR and traceCLEAN
The subPUR has proven to be an efficient and reliable instrument, allowing a continuous supply of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid of high purity. “It has reduced some quantification limits to minimize the content of metal in blank“.
The analysis of nitric acid obtained with subPUR showed an equivalent or even superior quality in respect of the used commercial acid employed before.
The cleaning step, using traceCLEAN system, can be easily and safely performed for quartz materials, glass, TFM and PFA, as well as digestion vessels and accessories for analysis. The overall process takes less than an hour without any exposure acid vapors.
Milestone has developed the duoPUR and subPUR, sub-boiling distillation systems which allow laboratories to make their own high purity acids at dramatically reduced costs.
