Modern teaching in synthetic chemistry & extraction
The University
of Montpellier - Their area of work is in the extraction of natural products using hydrodistillation, which tooks approximately 4 hours to complete. ETHOS X system has reduced the extraction time to 15 minutes, delivering products with higher purity compared to traditional extraction methods.
BACKGROUND
The University of Montpellier is the 6th largest university in France with about 50,000 students including 7,000 from abroad. One of the most innovative higher education
institutions in the world, UM is very well reputed among academics.
IMPLEMENTATION
The procedure for extraction of flavors and fragrances from plants or spices comprises two steps: extraction using a hydrodistillation method then analysis by GC or GCMS. While the analysis requires minutes, the hydrodistillation extraction process takes approximately 4 hours to complete.
CONCLUSION
The Chemistry Department
purchased a Milestone ETHOS X microwave enhanced extraction system that has reduced the extraction time to 15 minutes. The
system also delivers a product with higher purity compared to traditional extraction methods that are based on the use of organic solvents.
