Milestone Introduces Quick and Safe Microwave Fusion

June 1-2, 2010, Joannesburg, South Africa

Presented by Milestone Srl in association with Impala Platinum and Apollo Scientific

What is Fusion?

Fusion consists in the mixing of an oxidizing sample with a lithium borate flux. This mix is heated up to a temperature of 1000°C. At this temperature, the flux melts and dissolves samples to form a perfectly homogeneous mass; the molten material is either cast to form a glass disk to be analyzed by X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), or poured into an acid for rapid dissolution for subsequent analysis by Atomic Absorption (AA), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), or any traditional wet chemistry method. Typical samples include cements, ores, slag, sediments, soils, rocks, ceramics, pigments and glasses.

Milestone MultiFast makes for Safer and Reproducible results.

Milestone has manufactured the new MultiFast Ceramic Furnace Fusion insert to fit into a standard Milestone ETHOS1 or START D microwave labstation. This, combined with the standard Easywave software control system enables the user to perform a fusion technique within a very Safe and Stable environment where temperature is precisely controlled by the microwave program. The temperature of sample with the combination of a relevant flux is increased rapidly to 1000°C within 6 minutes. The samples are then kept at this temperature for a further 8 minutes, during this time the sample melts into a clear solution or melt. The melt is then poured onto platinum disks or further dissolved into and acid for analysis on an AA, ICP or XRF.

Who should attend:

This Fusion Seminar is a one-day theoretical seminar explaining the technology behind Microwave Fusion and its advantages.

This overview will give you a clear understanding of current options and considerations and would be beneficial to both Laboratory Managers and Laboratory Fusion Chemists.
